If you have landed here and do not know what you are looking at, this page says it briefly: what you can do with a publication, what we guarantee and what we do not.
What is here
We publish our research. Each work has a document of reference, deposited in an external public archive that gives it a permanent address and keeps it independently of us. If this site disappeared tomorrow, that file would stay where it is.
For each work you find three things here: the page that presents it, the text readable in the browser where we were able to produce it, and a page that states exactly what the deposited file is.
How to read it
You can read the text in the browser, downloading nothing. It is the web version, produced from the file the deposited edition was typeset from and compared with it before publication.
The document of reference remains the deposited PDF. Where a detail in the web version does not match, the PDF prevails. And if you cite a result, cite the PDF: that is what stays identical over time, and what the permanent address points to.
How to check it
Every published edition has a page stating the exact size of the file and its digest, a code that changes if a single byte changes. You can select your own PDF and compare: the computation happens in your browser, the file never reaches us and is kept nowhere.
The same page lists the sources you can check without going through us: the public archive, the permanent address, the source code where it is public, and copies kept by third-party archives. When one edition supersedes another, the earlier one stays published with its own data: a line is added to the history, nothing already there is rewritten.
What it does not prove
Knowing what a file is and when it was deposited says nothing about whether the work is correct. It does not prove that it is original, that it came before anyone else's, that it was written by whoever claims it, that other researchers have assessed it, or that it contains no mistakes. None of that can be derived from a digest.
Being published on this site is not the same as academic publication. Where a work has been assessed by other researchers, and where it has not, is written on its own page in plain words.
Nor is it a legal certification or an expert opinion. It is something smaller and sturdier: whatever we declare, anyone can check.
